A 20-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder after his high-speed vehicle struck and killed a 68-year-old woman in a fatal crash on Christmas Eve in Kalamazoo.

Elham Muzamel Hamid was arraigned Monday and released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. on December 24 at the intersection of South Burdick Street and Hutchinson Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found two heavily damaged vehicles. Marcie Nance was unresponsive inside one of the cars and had to be extricated. Despite officers immediately rendering life-saving aid, she was pronounced deceased at the scene, KDPS said.

Investigators determined Nance had stopped at the intersection and was attempting to turn northbound onto South Burdick Street. Before completing her turn, her vehicle was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by Hamid, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, according to KDPS.

Nearly three months later, the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor's Office authorized the murder charge against Hamid on Thursday. He was taken into custody Friday.

Hamid is scheduled to return to court for a probable cause hearing on April 2, followed by a preliminary examination on April 9, according to court records obtained by WWMT.

The case is being investigated by the KDPS Criminal Investigation Division.
