KALAMAZOO, Mich. A 22-year-old man faces multiple felony charges after he opened fire during a baby shower at a Girl Scouts facility, injuring two men and raising questions about safety at rented community spaces.
Pharrell Norman Stacy, 22, was arraigned Monday on six counts related to the Sunday afternoon shooting. The charges include two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of felony firearm, and one count of discharging a firearm in a building causing injury.
Judge Richard Santoni set bond at $100,000 cash or surety. The judge emphasized community safety concerns during the arraignment.
"It has been indicated this occurred at the Girl Scout building during a baby shower when shots were fired. I cannot imagine anything more dangerous to our community," Santoni told the court.
What Happened
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to the scene around 5:16 p.m. on April 12. Officers arrived to find a private event using the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Kalamazoo Regional Program and Training Center facility on West Maple Street.
Police determined a verbal argument escalated into a physical struggle inside the building. Gunfire was discharged during the disturbance.
Officers found one 25-year-old victim outside the main entrance with gunshot wounds to both legs. A second 25-year-old victim was located inside the building with gunshot wounds to his chest and lower body.
Both men were taken to the hospital. One has since been released while the other remains in stable condition, KDPS said.
Stacy was found hiding in a lower-level closet at the facility. Officers took him into custody without incident. Detectives recovered a firearm at the scene.
[During the arraignment, Judge Richard Santoni described the allegations in detail, saying Stacy is accused of shooting two people identified in court as Tyrone Lewis Jr. and Devon Brown, both 25, inside the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan training center.](https://arcwestmichigan.com/news/local/kalamazoo-girl-scouts-shooting-man-arrested-pharrell-stacy-hide-closet-found-two-men-shot-baby-shower-rented-out-building-charges-michigan-wwmt)
The Incident According To Police
Court documents indicate Stacy was a guest at the baby shower. Police said Stacy admitted to shooting one man after that man began punching him repeatedly during the incident.
Stacy told police he did not see a gun before he shot the man in the chest and lower body.
"The suspect in Sunday's shooting at the Girl Scouts building in Kalamazoo was arraigned on Monday," FOX 17 reported. "The charges stem from a shooting on April 12 inside the Girl Scouts Kalamazoo Regional Center."
Questions About Safety And Oversight
The incident has raised questions about how Stacy was able to bring a weapon into the gathering and whether any safeguards were in place to prevent violence at the facility.
Stacy has a prior 2022 assault and battery charge on his record, along with several misdemeanor traffic offenses, according to local court records.
Community Reaction
Residents in the area say the shooting is part of a troubling pattern of gun violence in Kalamazoo.
"It is usually pretty peaceful. You do not really see a whole lot of people out on the street," Lawrence Wise, a local resident, said Sunday after 5:30 p.m.
Others say the incident reflects broader concerns about gun violence in the community.
"We have so many mass shootings in this country. Kalamazoo is not immune to those things, so it is very unfortunate when it happens and needs to be addressed," Tom Kopinski, another local resident, said.
Still, some residents questioned where responsibility should fall when private events are held in community spaces.
"I do not think the burden should be on these places that rent things out to have to frisk everybody going in the door. They are lovely spaces that should be utilized by the community," Kopinski said.
